British High Commissioner, Mrs Carolyn Davidson, presents award at a special celebration held at the British Council Auditorium in Lusaka on 12 June 2009. Andrew’s prize is a week long study tour to the UK hosted by SPACE architects and sponsored by Silverlink Holdings Ltd.

Mrs Davidson spoke to the gathering of around 60 architects, NGO and Government representatives:

I think that Build IT International’s work is fantastic. Not only do they build much needed schools but, and this is really important, they leave behind skills in the community. Congratulations to all who took part in the competition and to all those involved in the work of Build IT International.

Andrew Phiri’s design was commended by Anthony Chatta, Chair of the Zambia Institute of Architects competitions committee.

Phiri beat off seven other submissions with a clear, well presented and well thought through concept. The judges liked his use of locally made building materials, the innovative shape and generous verandah. It should give a light, airy classroom that creates a stimulating learning environment.

Second prize was won by Lachman Kataria and third place went to Nicholas Phiri.
