Alfred admiring his work as another perfect
soil block comes off the press at Fiwila

Alfred has been in-charge of construction work at Fiwila since 2006. He is 49 years old and supports a family of 12 (including nephews and nieces).

Although he has no formal qualifications he has lots of experience building houses for local people. Build IT International has trained Alfred to use new tile and brick making technologies for the school.

“I have learned to use the tile machine and build really good roofs. I have also learned to make soil blocks using this machine from Kenya – the bricks are much better than the ones we make by burning. It is much cheaper and lots of people have come to have a look”

Build IT technical advisor, Malcolm Alcock, has trained Alfred in project management skills such as drawing up a bill of quantities, pricing and managing labourers. He has been impressed with Alfred’s work so far.

Alfred is keen to grow his business and has been approached by six people to build new homes nearby. Even the local MP has ordered 500 roof tiles!

By the end of next year Alfred will own the machinery used by the project and we hope, continuing to thrive.
