We are in the process of moving to a new financial year. It was July to June in the past, and will be the calendar year from 2013. Hence the next externally audited figures will be for the 18 month period July 2011 to December 2012. These will be available in May 2013.

This change will bring the financial year in line with the project planning cycle and make it easier to comply with statutory deadlines in Zambia where we also publish accounts.

However, we are delighted to publish our income and expenditure figures for the 12 months to June 2012. These have been subjected to an internal audit.

The highlights are:

• Programme expenditure has increased by 37% to £609,140 as we complete more projects and benefited more people. This is the fifth consecutive year that expenditure on projects has increased
• Spending on programme activities represents 80.2% of total expenditure
• Total income down by 17% to £627,454 reflecting the difficult economic circumstances in the UK
• General reserves stand at £154,889 of which £143,750 is unrestricted cash. This represents at 2.3 months of total expenditure or around 4.5 months of core expenditure
• A balanced budget has been agreed for January to December 2012 and a new budget for 2013 is under preparation

Programme expenditure in Africa:

Build It remains in good financial health. Furthermore, we have good prospects for support in the pipeline, including a major new corporate partnership from 2013. Every effort is being made to increase the charity’s supporter base and maximise unrestricted income.
