A new report published by Build It reviews our approach to sustainable building and provides recommendations on the way forwards.
Our latest project has started – building a new community school in Shipungu, Central Zambia.
It’s a strange feeling being pleased and sad at the same time; pleased that we will be building much needed school facilities in the Shipungu community; but sad that so many children lack the basic education many of us take for granted here in the UK.
In Shipungu, children make up 50% of the population and access to education is a real problem. Without a decent education, children become trapped in poverty, with little hope of fulfilling their potential.
The school currently packs 235 students into small, dark and very hot makeshift structures, whilst other children in the area have to walk a 15km (a 2-3 hour walk) to the next school.
We have already started work on the design of the building, with the local community and students all voting on what they’d like the new school to look like.
Once complete, the Zambian Ministry of Education have also pledged to provide ongoing support to the school, including training the 4 volunteer teachers to a professional standard.
