A new report published by Build It reviews our approach to sustainable building and provides recommendations on the way forwards.
There has been good progress at Twapia, where we are building a new secondary school, to be run by UK charity PEAS. Phase one of the two-year project is now well underway and the five new classrooms and girl’s dormitory are taking shape. Former Kawama trainees, pictured right, have been hired by the contractor, who is extremely impressed with their work.
After a lot of hardwork and dedication by everyone on site, the roof has now been put in place for the three classroom block and work on the interior has started. This is the furthest advanced building and is already looking great!
Despite the rain, our 14 trainees, working in two groups of seven, have been busy building the three latrine blocks.
The two classroom science laboratory (pictured right) is now roof level and work will soon begin on the school workbenches and plumbing.
Boarding facilities at the school are essential as some children will have to travel a long way. We are on track with the dormitory and foundations have been completed and floor slabs have are ready to be poured.
This will be the first secondary school in the area and everyone is looking forward to the first day of class, when the school officially opens in January.
