Key Details | Two classrooms for Community School |
Build It International have completed two classrooms for science and home economics at this large, established community school in Western Province. New classrooms were needed because demand for places at this successful school is increasing. Work started on site in August 2010 and continued, after a break for the rainy season, in May 2011. The building was completed in July 2011. This is the first phase of our partnership with Alan Kerins Projects (AKP), based in Ireland.
AKP commissioned the standard Ministry of Education classroom design, with minor improvements and adapted for stabilised soil block and micro-concrete roof tiles.
Around 20,000 soil blocks were required and these were manufactured on-site by a hydraform machine rather than by hand. With a team of eight, and powered by a diesel engine, it can produce up to 1,000 blocks a day. We liked the machine so much that we are using it on our largest project to date; a Secondary School at Twapia.
Trainees at Kaoma were selected from the local community. They include three inmates from a local prison, who undertook training ahead of their release. All 17 trainees passed their trades tests in November 2010 – a fantastic result!
