Phase one completed two specialised classrooms in July 2011. The second phase of our work at Kaoma will create 3 new multipurpose classrooms for Kaoma Community School. Kaoma is a town in Western Province, Zambia. High numbers of children in the area and the success of the school have resulted in a huge demand for places, especially as the government schools are difficult for many to access.
This is the second phase of our partnership with Alan Kerins Projects (AKP), based in Ireland. The new classrooms are based on the improved Ministry of Education design, including our trademark hydraform Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block and micro-concrete Parry roof tiles.
At the site, we are producing blocks using a hydraform machine which churns out 1,000 blocks every day!
Further to the 16 trainees who worked on our first phase at Kaoma, 6 new trainees have been recruited to be trained in building skills such as making blocks, tiles, bricklaying and roofing. At the end of their initial training, trainees will be entered for their official trades tests. If passed, the trainees will gain a certificate that will help them find future work in the construction sector.
Many of the phase one trainees have been hired to work on the build of phase two, giving them vital further experience that can help them access jobs in the future. Congratulations all round!
