Kawama is a poor, high-density urban compound on the edge of Ndola, a mining town on the Zambian Copperbelt. Most people work in the informal sector and there are no secondary schools serving the 7,000 residents. Children account for 75% of the population and over 20% are orphaned. Education is essential if children are to escape the cycle of poverty.
In 2010, Build It constructed a new primary school in Kawama. We have started building a new secondary school in the same area to enable children to access further education. The school will have an initial capacity of 250 and will grow to 1,000 children.
20 local men and women joined the Training into Work programme on the 1st September, they are learning basic building skills on-the-job whilst building Kawama school, enabling them to find work in construction in the future and earn a living to support their families.
Phase I includes:
‘ Kawama has no secondary school. Children whose parents can afford secondary school must walk for an hour to get to Chifubu or further to get to Kansenshi’ – Jennifer Mikubila, Kawama resident
Once complete, the school will be run by specialist education NGO PEAS
20 trainees were selected from the local community to join our Training into Work programme.
Working with a qualified builder and our training officer, trainees will learn a range of construction skills whilst helping to build the new secondary school.
The trainees will learn a range of building skills from block making to roofing over 6 months. Once complete, the trainees will undertake an official trades test by Zambia's construction governing body. It doesn't end there either - we'll be helping all our trainees to find work after their training.
