Imagine having to walk over 8 hours to your nearest health clinic. That is what many people in the Nchute area of Zambia are currently forced to do. Health facilities are limited in Zambia, where a staggering 48 newborns and 8 women die during childbirth every day.
We are working with the local community in Nchute and the Ministry of Health for Chongwe District to build a new health post, which will improve access to health services for over 2,500 people. It will be operated by the Ministry of Health and provide all basic primary care facilities, services for under-fives and pregnant women together with a small maternity ward. It will serve as a base for outreach work in public health and maternal child health.
A brand new design has been developed with input from the local community and a specialist architect. One key feature is the separation of the small maternity unit from the main out-patients. This will give pregnant women greater privacy.
The local community has worked tirelessly collecting and delivering sand, gravel and crushed stones to the site to help make the clinic a reality.
11 trainees have been selected from the local community and have already completed their formal classroom based training, which includes health and safety. They will be involved in all stages of the construction work from setting out to making blocks and painting the plastered walls.
Former Build IT trainees Sabron Muchimba (from our Makangwe project) and Enoch Sikazwe (from our Fiwila project) have both been contracted to oversee the production of Interlocking Stablised Soil Blocks (ISSB) as well as Parry Roof Tiles.
