Build IT International is working with UK charity PEAS to set up a new secondary school in Twapia, Ndola on the Copperbelt in Zambia.
The school, which will be owned and operated by PEAS, is their first project outside Uganda, where they run nine schools. The aim is to provide a high quality secondary education in an area with a population of 30,000, where there is as yet no secondary school. The new school will take students from Years 8 -12 and will eventually accommodate 1,000 children.
Build IT International is managing the construction work, which will take at least two years. The school will be built to an adapted government design, using our trademark stabilised soil blocks. Phase 1 includes five classrooms and a girls’ dormitory.
Community members are looking forward to the new school and have helped to clear the 8 hectare site.
The school aims to open in February 2012. Next year, Phase 2 will involve adding more classrooms, a dormitory for boys, and other facilities.
14 members of the local community are currently being selected as building trainees who will construct the ablution blocks and receive training in theory before taking their TEVETA exams.
We are also delighted to hear five former trainees from our Kawama project have been hired as labourers by contractor Costabuild.
