Sustainable building in Africa
We aim to reduce the environmental impact and energy costs of our projects. We use local building materials, sustainable technologies and improved designs that are appropriate to the communities we are working in. We encourage others to build the same way.
High Quality Workmanship
Our Training into Work programme ensures our buildings are completed to a high standard and are as low maintenance as possible.
We use local materials and sustainable building methods including stabilised soil blocks and rammed earth. These methods also make our buildings cool and light.
Analysis and Reports
Our Technical Advisory Group meets regularly to review our buildings, including the designs and materials we use. We have put together a review entitled: Sustainable Buildings and Design
Sustainable Materials & Design
We are continually looking to improve our use of local materials, reduce costs and make our buildings simpler.
We regularly hold technical reviews to reflect on design and material issues from our projects.
Inadequate sanitation is a major cause of disease in the developing world.
Build It International builds latrines at all its projects.
The current approach for sanitation facilities is to use Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines wherever possible.
Sustainable Building Techniques
We use a range of local materials to build our projects.
