FAIR TRAIN or TRAIN FARE? September 2008
This is great news story just received from Zambia about the difference our training is making to two people's lives... In 2007, Enoch and Mulungwe were trained by BII in tile making whilst working on the building of a new school block at the project in Fiwila. "Their work was first class, hard working and with very few tiles not making the grade" said Malcolm Alcock, our technical advisor. But that is not the end of the story. Earlier this year Build IT International was approached by an organization in Lusaka that is building an orphanage. They were interested in using the same tile making equipment. Charity Lubingo, our local representative put the orphanage in touch with Enoch and Mulungwe and they were hired to train the local contractor. The two earned Zkw 50,000 day (about £8), over twice the normal tile maker rate. All their expenses were paid. Their client was very happy as well. "It was a good experience" explained Enoch. "Please can you find us more work like that!" This is just the sort of opportunity that Build IT International wants to help create and it illustrates the impact of our approach to supporting poor people in Zambia. What is particularly great is that Mulungwe is deaf and dumb and he has had few real opportunities in life. We think there is plenty of work for him now in Zambia.
