An Uplifting Update from Kawama
Build It International’s chief executive, Andrew Jowett, recently visited the project to check on progress. Since July, we have:
- Completed foundations and sub-structure works on the new three classroom block
- Started work on a new teacher’s house
- Signed a contract with ex-trainee Daniel to build a school kitchen
- There remains a lot to do but the project is on target to finish in January 2014.
24 trainees have been recruited and fully kitted out with safety gear. They are about a third of the way through their formal training which takes 21 weeks to complete. In December the trainees will undertake an official trades test.
Some great news for last year’s trainees at Kawama, the main contractor, Florajack has hired five of last year’s trainees to work on the current project; Harrimon, Gordon, Saul, Joshua and Nicholas. Joshua has even been selected to be the foreman on site!
This school will be run by specialist education NGO, PEAS when it opens in January 2014 with 340 pupils.
