More support for the children at Chitukuko

In 2016 your support meant we could help the community of Chitukuko to establish a new school for over 500 families displaced when ownership of farmland changed hands. They managed to obtain plots of land on a desolate site on the edge of Lusaka where they started to rebuild their homes and their lives.

The new school buildings have played a huge role in helping this poor community to get back on their feet. Under the guidance of Head Teacher Vera Musoni, pupil numbers have grown dramatically from 230 to 488 in January 2020.

We are back at Chitukuko to:

  • Construct two more teachers’ houses. With no acceptable rented housing available nearby, providing quality accommodation will bring more qualified teachers to the school. The first house is 90% complete and the second house 40%.
  • We took this opportunity to revise the design of our standard house to make it as affordable as possible for low income families. The result – a 54sqm two-bed house with material costs of £7,000.
  • Complete a second latrine block with 7-cubicles. Solely for girls, the latrines will provide much needed privacy to encourage more girls to stay in school as they grow up.

Teachers’ Houses

The first teacher’s house is nearing completion. The houses have two bedrooms, living space, open kitchen and a separate, individual latrine at the back of the house

Door and window frames have been installed in the second house

Final touches on the girls latrines completing interior and exterior paintwork, and paving around the structure
