Zambezi Sawmills February Update
We are proud to share that the keys to four fabulous new classrooms have been handed over to the School’s Head, Mrs Balita Tembo Zulu by Ian our Project Manager. This took place soon after the building was being inspected and signed off by the District Education Authorities (DEBS). The official opening ceremony will take place in April.
With over 900 students and just five classrooms, this school in a poor area of Livingstone was desperately overcrowded. But not any more! In fact, the school now intends to expand to include grades 8 and 9.
All four classrooms are built to Build Its standard specifications and oversized at 64sqm to accommodate as many learners as possible. They are light and airy with insulation and extractors in the roof. The design also includes ramp access.
One of the rooms is designed for teaching Information Technology, recently added to the curriculum. Having a new room to teach computer skills will be invaluable to support young people to find work especially in local tourism or pursue higher education.
52% of pupils at the school who passed Grade 7 are girls which demonstrates their ability to thrive and have a good future. Zambezi Sawmills Community School offers girls not just an education but a safe sanctuary to learn. We have expanded toilet facilities with a brand new block. This features robust stainless steel latrines and toilet/washroom for girls. This is important to help ensure that older girls don’t drop out of school when they reach puberty (common in Zambia).
