Most recently, we have partnered with three rural schools – Mwachisompola, Miswa, and Malundu – to improve learning environments through the construction of new classrooms and safe sanitation facilities. These have made an incredible difference to the young learners.
But we know there is still more that can be done. Many children arrive at these schools hungry. That is why we are exploring a second phase of development to help the schools access Zambia’s School Feeding Programme.
The programme supports both government and community schools, and is designed to benefit all early childhood and primary learners.
Essential infrastructure must be in place before a school can be approved to join the feeding programme. Schools are required to have a feeding shelter, a kitchen structure, and a secure food storage facility.
A feeding shelter provides children with a protected and hygienic place to eat away from harsh weather, dust, and contamination. A kitchen allows meals to be prepared safely and consistently, while a secure storage facility protects food supplies from moisture, pests and spoilage.
By supporting the construction of these facilities at Mwachisompola, Miswa and Malundu Schools, we can help secure access to daily school meals for hundreds of children – giving them not only the nourishment they need to learn, but also a stronger chance of staying in school, succeeding in the classroom, and building a brighter future.
