Albert’s blog: Lupuka leaps forward

Over the last month the community has really got stuck into the site preparation work, thanks to Mr. O’Brien Kaputula’s competitive approach!

Lupuka Community Meeting
Mr. O’Brien, the PTA chairman of the Lupuka Community School, called a large meeting and told the Lupuka community that there was lots of work to be done. He had been inspired by his recent visit to nearby Kabaka and saw firsthand how the community there had organised themselves and he wanted Lupuka to do even better!

At the meeting the community organised themselves into teams, and each group were then assigned a task for the day, either fencing the site, clearing the site and collecting the materials needed for block production.

Mr O’Brien’s competitive edge was on show again, as he made these daily tasks a competition for the community. The targets have been smashed each day!

If the teams continue to beat their targets it won’t be long before the site is fully prepared for building work to begin. Block production should start next month, and I will be joined by Justus, Build It’s Training manager, who will assess and select the trainees and begin the training into work programme.

Such amazing progress has been made already and it’ll be exciting to see new developments at the site over the next couple of months with such fantastic progress being made by the community!
