Construction of George in Full Swing

Our chief executive Andrew Jowett, flew out to Zambia to see how our projects are getting on. He reports that George Secondary School Phase II is now in full swing.

The main contractor on the 1×3 classroom block, Kaopacs, has overseen excavation work and the footings. There are 20 trainees now working on the project having completed their health and safety training.

Work has started on a new latrine block and 15,000 soil blocks have been manufactured for the various works.

Completion of the girls’ dormitory continues despite a delay when the supplier couldn’t supply roofing sheets that matched Phase 1 of the building.

Build It project manager, Alice, is delighted that the project is fully underway.

“We are now making fantastic progress and I expect we will finish by January 2014”.

We all hope so because that is when the school opens for a new academic year with over 100 extra pupils being recruited to the closed waiting list!

The school is owned and managed by our project partner, UK charity PEAS. George School opened in January 2012 with 250 places. It provides a high quality secondary education in a poor area of Ndola with a population of 30,000.
