From vision to reality: Progress on Chisamba’s Maternity Unit

We are thrilled to share an update on the construction of a new Maternity and Infant Health Unit at Chisamba Rural Health Centre.

This project will transform healthcare for women, children, and families across the rural community of Chisamba, Zambia. The new facility will provide a welcoming and efficient environment, enabling the delivery of high-quality care to meet the community’s needs for generations to come.

In September, our team, which includes young trainees working under the guidance of our training team and supported by contractor Izwanga Zambia Ltd, reached a major milestone completing the concrete slab for the building’s foundation.

This paved the way for the next phase, laying the first course of blocks to form the beginning of the superstructure.

Work begins on the ‘superstructure’; the part of a building or structure above the ground level.

A ring beam is a reinforced concrete beam that wraps around the building. It strengthens the walls to support the structure, making it safer and more durable. Shuttering, or formwork, is a temporary mold that holds the concrete in place while it is poured and hardens, forming the ring beam.

It’s fantastic to see the progress onsite. The team is working diligently to ensure every aspect of the construction aligns with our high standards for safety and durability.

We look forward to continuing to share updates as this vital project takes shape. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.  Together we are creating a space where families can access essential care and support. Together we are laying the foundations for a healthier, stronger community.
