The community have been busy collecting the raw materials needed to re-start making the earth blocks that will be used to build the classroom block. They have also built a house for Ian so he can live on-site during construction, saving time and transport costs. Once the building work is complete the house will be used as teachers’ accommodation.

A total of 20 trainees have been recruited for the project and have completed a ten day intensive basic training course. They are now learning about bricklaying whilst constructing the classroom walls.

During their training, the group will learn basic building skills including: bricklaying, plastering, setting out, constructing foundations, concrete work and general fixing.

Later in the year all trainees will sit a TEVETA (Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority) exam, giving them the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification on construction. This, alongside the skills and practical experience they have learnt during their training will help them to earn a better living and support their families.

We are aiming for the school to be completed by November and look forward to keeping you updated on progress. The classroom block is now fully funded but we are still fundraising for the latrines and teachers’ house. If you’d like to help please get in touch.
