A year ago, expectant mothers in Chisamba rural community were giving birth in a cramped maternity ward with only two beds and no privacy. It was an overstretched facility, struggling to meet the the needs of fast-growing community.
Today the reality for mothers in Chisamba is very different
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the dedication of the local community, a new maternity annex stands on the grounds of the Chisamba Rural Health Centre.
Since its opening, 356 babies have been safely delivered and 831 children under five years are now accessing vital healthcare in a safe, welcoming space. The expanded facility offers larger more private spaces, dedicated antenatal and postnatal areas, and electricity to support safer deliveries day and night.

A busy day at the maternity annex
We recently returned to the clinic to catch up with some of the women and healthcare staff using the new annex. It was a heart warming visit.
At the front desk, midwife Sister Sarah Cainess welcomed us as she registered new patients and discharged others. Sister Cainess kindly took time from her busy morning to show us around the facility, introducing us to some of the mothers using the new space.

Expectant first‑time mother Theresa Mkhandawire shared her relief and gratitude about the new annex. She told us she had heard many stories about the old ward; how small it was and how unbearably hot it could get.
“I’m very happy that my experience is different, especially as a first‑time mother. I came here yesterday to wait for my baby, and so far, everything has been good. I’m just waiting to give birth.”

In the postnatal room we meet Mary Shibombi holding her newborn. Her two older children had been born in the old maternity facility at the centre. Mary said:
“The difference is huge. Not just during delivery, but even after. As you can see, I’m sitting here safely with my baby. Unlike before when I had to sit with regular patients while waiting to be discharged. Now we have a room meant only for mothers and their new babies.”

Shenice Mwale had returned to the clinic 13-days after giving birth because her baby Trisha Chabatama had a small fever. She was calm and confident as the nurses attended to her child.
“The new annex is amazing. There’s a lot of space, all the necessary equipment, and most importantly privacy. The old ward didn’t have that, and I know many women here truly appreciate it.”

The new annex represents real progress for families across Chisamba. It’s a milestone made possible through partnership, commitment and community effort. It means safer, more dignified care for mothers, babies and children for years to come.
