New skills in plastering

We are excited to continue expanding our training programme with the introduction of a new course in Plastering and Rendering.

Twenty young people, 16 men and 4 women, were recruited in spring and have been learning valuable new skills at our Centre for Excellence.

“The construction sector in Zambia needs thousands of skilled workers each year” explains Build It Training Manager Patrick Mwamba.

“Our market research shows that plastering skills are very much in demand by the local construction sector. We have developed the course in consultation with local contractors so trainees can demonstrate high standards of work that meet employer expectations.

We want our trainees to be able to go straight into work.”

Trainees have gone through theoretical and practical training learning how to use plastering tools and apply mortar based plaster finishes.

They are now starting their work placements undertaking a minimum of three-months paid work experience with local contractors. This will help them to further develop their skills,  as well as gain real-life experience of working in the construction sector.

Developing positive relationships with local contractors continues to be crucial to the success of our work and we have seen an increase in enquiries from contractors looking for both trainees and graduates which is very encouraging.

The new course in Plastering and Rendering adds to our existing training courses in Brick and Block-laying, Painting and Rough Carpentry.
