In April 26 trainees from our Construction Multiskills course (Group 98) visited an active construction site managed by McCoy in the Ngwerere area, Lusaka.

This two-day pilot aimed to provide trainees with real-life exposure to the bustling world of construction prior to starting their work placements.

Work placements are a crucial part of all our training programmes. However stepping onto a busy construction site for the first time can be intimidating and confusing, especially with multiple contractors often working onsite. We want to enhance the experience for trainees and ensure they feel better prepared for their work placements.

During their time onsite at McCoy’s, the trainees participated in various tasks including practising their blockwork skills, participating in setting out a house and shadowing senior bricklayers. The supervising engineer closely monitored their behaviour, and was impressed by their positive outlook and thoughtful questions asked.

One of the trainees taking part in the visit was 20-year old Joyce Chitalu, who has always wanted to gain a skill in construction:

“My family, especially my parents were very supportive of me applying for bricklaying training. My father encouraged me to work extra hard because I’m a lady, and not to let anyone discourage me about the decision I have made! The trip to McCoys was a fun and interesting learning experience – I learnt some industry secret and techniques from the bricklayers onsite! I believe that once I complete my training, it will be a stepping stone that will help me to achieve my goal of becoming a contractor in the future.”

We continue working to ensure that our trainees are well-prepared for the challenges of the professional world. We could not do this without the active engagement of contractors across the construction sector. Their input and support is key to this. Witnessing contractors rally behind the next generation of builders is hugely encouraging. Together we continue building a brighter future for young people in Zambia.
