Hand Up For Women In Construction: Hybrid Panel Discussion 29th March

Construction is traditionally seen as work for men – especially at the Trades level. Being a woman in this industry is not easy. With serious issues such as gender stereotyping, discrimination, sexual harassment and unequal access to opportunities, it is no surprise that the industry remains male dominated.

This is an important issue for Build It International. Gender equality and the empowerment of women are values that guide our work in training young people in Africa to have the opportunity to work and thrive. Despite being as competent as their male counterparts, our studies show that our female graduates take longer to find work, and often earn less than their male counterparts.

To discuss these issues, we have invited a panel of influential women from the Zambian and UK construction industry with relevant experience.

We will consider the challenges and what we can all do to influence change: to promote gender equality in construction, especially entering the key trades.

Confirmed Speakers:

Lucie Kasanga – Chair of BII Zambia, and Zambian’s first female civil engineer

Shenaaz Chenia – CEO Youthbuild Ventures UK

Michaela Wain – BBC The Apprentice Finalist, Owner of Design & Build UK, and Ambassador for Women in Construction Awards UK.

Roxy Weller – Assistant Building Manager, Willmott Dixon
