The roof is up on the new classrooms at Mwachisompola Primary School – an exciting milestone for the project.
Construction of these additional classrooms will provide much-needed space for the children attending this growing school.
Classroom environment has a significant impact on student learning. Too many children in Zambia are squeezed into overcrowded classrooms, classrooms that are in poor and unsafe conditions, or are learning outside. Classrooms should be a positive space, where children feel safe and secure.
The construction of the new facilities at Mwachisompola Primary School will help increase capacity to teach Grades 8 and 9.

25 young people from the local community went through our Training into Work programme. They gained valuable skills and experience working on the construction of Mwachisompola School.
They finished their training at the end of December 2023. Several have been hired by the contractor to help complete the project.
With work nearly complete on the roof, the team will move onto final fittings including window glazing, doors and locks.
The new block consists of three classrooms each measuring 66 metres squared, plus one smaller classroom, 49 metres squared, which going forward will become a dedicated computer room.
We are also improving sanitation at the school with the construction of Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines.
The pupil’s VIP latrine block has one cubicle and urinals for the boys on one side. On the other side there are four cubicles for the girls, with one having a wash space area. This will help girls to manage their periods. Many girls miss school or drop out of education completely when they start menstruating, because they lack the proper facilities and products to support them.

In addition to the pupil’s latrine block, we are also building a separate 2-cubicle latrine block for the teachers. Currently the teachers have to walk 10-minutes to use the toilets in the local church. This situation urgently needs to change.
Work at Mwachisompola will be completed next month. We cannot wait to show you the finished buildings.
