Raising the roof at Naluyanda

The roof is on at Naluyanda Community School which means that the children are a big step closer to getting into their new classrooms.

Generous support from our corporate partner BGL Group is bringing better facilities to over 300 young pupils of this community school in a peri-urban area north of the capital Lusaka.

We recruited twenty-three young people from the local area to train on the project, learning new skills that will open up new opportunities to find work and earn a living.

The trainees worked with the contractor and the Build It Site Agent on the construction of the timber roof structure. It was important that the roof covering went on before the start of the rainy season.

With the roof now on, work has moved onto glazing, plastering and painting.

The start of December saw our young trainees busy revising for their TEVETA Trades Test in Bricklaying, with their results due in the new year.

Work has also progressed well on the new latrine block.

We build Ventilated Improved Pit latrines which have ventilation pipes at the back and a more substantial structure. The ventilation pipes improve air circulation helping to both reduce smells and prevent the spread of diseases caused by flies, mosquitoes and other insects which are attracted to the pits. The latrines can be emptied and reused.

The latrine block will help improve the health and well-being of the children, as well as encourage more girls to remain in school as they grow up.

We look forward to sharing more photos in the new year, and in May 2020 we will be welcoming fifteen members of staff from BGL Group to Naluyanda so they can see first-hand how their support is #BuildingBrighterFutures.
