At the heart of the construction site for the new Maternity and Child Health unit at Chisamba Rural Health Centre, is a group of dedicated young trainees building a brighter future for their community.
Amongst them are Sarah and Dickson; two passionate individuals eager to learn new skills that will unlock career opportunities and transform their lives.
They are part of a project that will provide essential health services for parents and children for generations to come.
Sarah Mbewe:
“This opportunity is not like any other. I have no regrets of joining.
Unlike fellow female students who have stopped along the way, I will be here until the course is complete and I sit for my final exam.
I have gotten used to being around the guys. Actually I’m stronger than some of them, I can push a wheelbarrow full of bricks without breaking a sweat!” she said jokingly.
“I am very grateful for having a supportive family; my brother helped me apply for the programme and my mother cares for my children while I attend lessons or I’m onsite.”
Sarah braids hair during her free time to help earn extra income to support her mother.
Being a young mother who herself gave birth in the small labour room at Chisamba Health Centre, Sarah is passionate about how much this project will positively impact the lives of mothers from the community.
Dickson Mazau:
25-year old Dickson came to Build It through NGO Hands at Work Africa:
“Joining the training has been a rare privilege.
In the few months of being here I have learnt a lot. The training has been very engaging, and there’s always a new skill to learn which is exciting.” says Dickson.
Dickson shared that carpentry has been his favourite skill to learn, and that he would like to advance in this field.
The construction of the new maternity annex is something close to his heart:
“This maternity annex will help a lot of the women in this community.
My wife told me how uncomfortable and distressing it was for her when she gave birth from the old maternity room. It gives me joy that I am part of the solution.”
