Embarking on an extraordinary journey through the heart of Zambia, last June presented an adventure of a lifetime an adventure that was not only a test of endurance and camaraderie but also a profound contribution to a cause much greater than ourselves.
The group of cyclists that were daring enough to participate in the Zambia Cycle Challenge, had mixed levels of cycling experience. Some were seasoned veterans, whilst others, including myself, had never cycled for more than just pleasure on a sunny afternoon/morning.
Nonetheless, we were united in our mission: to pedal from the bustling capital of Lusaka to the majestic Victoria Falls in Livingston, all in support of Build It International.
Our goal was ambitious yet deeply inspiring – to fund a new group of 23 trainees through their construction qualification, thereby paving their way to a brighter future.
Our five-day odyssey commenced at Build It’s Centre for Excellence in Lusaka. Here, in this hub of learning and empowerment, trainees are equipped with vital construction skills. With each pedal stroke away from Lusaka, through towns like Mazabuka, Monze, Choma, and finally Kalomo, we not only traversed Zambia’s diverse landscapes but also connected with its heart – its people.
The journey kicked off with a warm welcome from the trainees at the Centre for Excellence. Their dedication, even on a weekend, to showcase their newfound skills was a powerful reminder of the impact of our cause.
With spirits high, we embarked on our first leg to Mazabuka, where the cricket and sports club offered a serene respite after a day of cycling through breathtaking vistas.
Each day brought its own set of challenges and wonders—from the intense heat of the Zambian sun on our way to Monze, to the sandy trails towards Kalomo that tested our resolve.
Yet, it was these moments, whether sharing ice creams in Choma or marvelling at the sunset in Kalomo, that forged unforgettable bonds among us. Our adventure culminated in a triumphant arrival at Victoria Falls, a fitting reward for covering over 500 kilometres and an emblem of the natural beauty that Zambia holds.
But our journey didn’t end at the falls. The following day, we visited Build It’s projects in Livingstone, including Zambezi Sawmills School and Libuyu Medical Centre. Witnessing the tangible outcomes of our fundraising -classrooms where children laughed and learned, and a maternity ward that offered hope and care to mothers -was incredibly moving.
Reflecting on our adventure, it was more than a cycling challenge; it was a journey of discovery and impact. The warmth and hospitality of the people we met, the breath-taking landscapes, and the shared moments of triumph and toil, all contributed to an unforgettable experience.
Beyond the physical feat, our collective effort raised over £35,000, a testament to the power of unity and the spirit of giving.
