Last year, 11 Build It trainees returned to the Shipungu community to build a teacher’s house.

A key element of our partnership with the Ministry of Education is to ensure that the schools we build are staffed by trained teachers. We have an agreement that if we construct teachers’ housing on site then the Ministry will provide trained teaching staff. Remote schools find it hard to attract fully qualified teachers, due to the distance from the towns and the lack of accommodation nearby.

Thanks to the construction of a two bedroom teachers’ house at Shipungu, Priscilla, a fully trained teacher has now moved to the school. A lot of improvements have taken place since her arrival. Priscilla has organised the community to repair the thatched roof on the old classroom and has given pupils the responsibility of caring for the plants in the school grounds.

Thanks to the teachers’ house we built, the future looks bright at Shipunugu. Priscilla has plans to establish a nursery at Shipungu and hopes the school will soon be recognised as one of the best in Kapiri District.

This story shows just how important it is to provide accommodation for teachers at the schools we build. This year, we are fundraising for staff houses for the remote Katuba community, to enable the children to benefit from a proper education.
