It is exciting to see construction nearing completion of the new facilities at Light of Hope Community School.

Over 200 children from this disadvantaged community on the edge of Livingstone will benefit from three new classrooms, latrines, hand washing facilities and teacher’s house.

Delays due to the pandemic meant that much of this project was pushed into the rainy season. This has caused some issues for our construction team, but the project is now just a few weeks from completion.

Construction of the timber roof structure of the classroom block

With no running water on site, we have built ventilated pit latrines. The ventilation pipes at the back of the structure will help increase air circulation to reduce smells. Installation of concrete hand wash basins will complete the work.

The latrine block has three cubicles for females, and one cubicle plus urinals for males

We have built a two-bedroom house. The school currently has four volunteer teachers, but the Ministry of Education provides qualified teachers to schools where suitable accommodation is available. This can significantly improve the quality of education the children receive.

Doors and glazing have been installed in the teacher’s house. Ground around the house is currently being prepared to lay pavers

As part of our Safe Hands initiative, we have built a hand wash station at the school. This permanent facility has space for 18 children to wash their hands at the same time.

The hand wash station is already operational, and will help to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.
