The village of Mukuyu is in a remote, rural location around 70km north of Lusaka.
The current school was built by the local community who were determined to help their children get an education. Several years on the building is now crumbling and unsafe, and cramped for the 231 pupils now enrolled at the school.
The community desperately needs a safe school building where their children can learn. Your support means we are:
- Building a three classroom block school building with teacher’s office and strong room
- Building an additional latrine block for girls to encourage more to stay in school as they grow up
- Improving existing teachers accommodation to help attract more qualified teachers to the school to improve the standard of education
All our projects are driven by the local community. The community at Mukuyu has been actively involved in preparing the clearing the site, gathering raw materials and producing around 12,000 Stabilised Soil Blocks needed for construction.
17 young people from the local area, 13 men and 4 women, have been recruited to train in construction. They are gaining new skills and valuable experience; new skills that will open up opportunities to find work and to earn a living.
Work is progressing well on the classroom block; foundations were set out and excavated, then foundation concrete blockwork completed.
The ground was then filled and compacted before the concrete slab was poured. Work on the walls is now beginning. We look forward to sharing more photo as work progresses at Mukuyu, and at our other school projects at Naluyanda and Chitukuko.
