We are pleased to mark an important early milestone in our work to enhance work-based learning opportunities for young people entering Zambia’s construction industry.

In October we hosted an orientation meeting with 17 participants, including representatives from Vocational Training Institutions (VTIs), industry, associations, and government ministries. The event marked the official launch of a new initiative under the Youth Economic Engagement through Work-Based Learning in Construction (YEEC) Project. The project is designed to strengthen practical, site-based training for young people.

The event brought together stakeholders to explore key themes that will shape the project’s implementation.

At it’s core, work-based learning places trainees directly on construction sites – combining hands-on experience with structured mentorship, strong safety oversight, and continuous assessment. This approach helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world industry demands.

Collaborating for success – the orientation meeting set the foundation for a strong start.

A key outcome of the meeting was the formation of a Technical Working Group. This group will guide the project during its inception phase. The group’s insights and industry knowledge will play a crucial role in ensuring the YEEC project remains relevant, high-quality, and impactful.

Looking ahead

Our thanks to everyone who took part in the orientation meeting. It marked the beginning of a collaborative effort – supported by the Liechtenstein Development Service – to build safer, more inclusive, and more effective work-based learning pathways in Zambia’s construction industry.

Next step include benchmarking visits to various institutions with strong track records in work-based learning. These visits will provide the opportunity to learn from best practices, strengthen partnerships, and inform the project’s delivery.
