68 trainees took their TEVETA bricklaying exams last week, marking the end of 8 months of construction training.
Our trainees have learnt a number of new skills whilst building new classroom blocks, teachers’ housing and latrines for their communities. As part of their training they have been taught a range of construction skills, including: bricklaying, plastering, how to set out a site, foundations, concrete work and fixing. For the first time, 10 trainees have also taken a carpentry exam.

The national vocational exams are administered by the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) in Zambia. A registered examiner came to each project to supervise practical tests over two days.

Gaining a national TEVETA qualification enables our trainees to compete for employment in the construction sector in Zambia. If they pass, they will receive a certificate and tool kit at graduation ceremonies held early next year, enabling them to continue to work as builders.

Our support for trainees doesn’t end there. We want our graduates to be successful in gaining work in construction. Acting on feedback from our trainees we now run post-training support activities to help our trainees reach their potential.

These activities range from making introductions to potential employers to holding “Finding a Job” workshops which provide advice on interview preparation, CV writing and other essential employment skills.

The trainees will receive the results of their exams in the New Year. We wish them the best of luck and are confident they will have successful careers in construction.
