We are continuing to work with the Mwala community, training a further 20 people to build three new classrooms for over 500 pupils who are currently learning in temporary tents.

16 men and 4 women have been selected to join our Training into Work programme. The trainees are learning basic construction skills to help them earn a living and provide for their families.

The group undertook a 10 day intensive training course where they learnt the basics about working on a building site. They were given their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and basic tools and taught about health and safety.

“We starting training in March, on the first day we were taught about health and safety, timekeeping and about the Site Manager. We were given safety boots, body suits and hard hats as well as building tools. It was interesting to use the new tools for the first time, a bit challenging, but it was fine”.

The trainees are now working alongside the contractor to dig the excavations of the new striking hexagonal shaped classrooms. Over the next few weeks trainees will work on preparing the ground for the casting of the foundation slab.

The new classroom will replace inadequate and overcrowded tents that are currently being used as emergency classrooms.
