On 21 March 2025 we visited Makululu Day Secondary School to deliver a career mentorship session aimed at encouraging more girls to consider a future in construction.

Headteacher Mrs Shumba expressed her excitement about the initiative, emphasising how it aligns with the aims of STEM schools to foster more skills development in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

There was a very warm welcome from pupils and staff, with the school’s cultural group treating everyone to a vibrant dance performance

Our guest speaker Racheal Njobvu, CEO of Modern Refinements, shared her inspiring journey.

Originally a communications graduate, she found her true passion in construction and transitioned from a production role to working onsite. She highlighted that the construction sector is not about not about gender – but about skill, dedication and a willingness to learn:

Racheal Njobvu, CEO of Modern Refinements: “I didn’t know I had it in me until I tried. I learnt everything I know today by doing it – practice makes perfect and if you want to be in this sector you have to be willing to learn, invest time into practicing until you can do seamless work.”

There were some great questions and lively discussions. Having role models like Racheal helps to break stereotypes, and reinforce the message that women can thrive in construction.
