Despite the grey skies and rain of the season, there is a real sense of brightness at Miswa School. The children have broken up for their Christmas holidays, but work continues for our construction team.

The build is progressing at pace on the new classroom block for this growing rural school. Separate latrines for pupils and teachers are also being built, helping to improve health at the school. These will be especially important for girls as they grow older, supporting them to manage their periods and continue with their education.

Full steam ahead

Twenty-five young people have enrolled onto our training programme to support this project. They are gaining new construction skills and valuable work experience.

In November they worked with the contractor to lay the concrete slab for the classroom block. In December, work has focused on the superstructure – the section of the building above ground. The walls have been going up, and door and window frames installed. A ring beam was cast to brace and strengthen the structure.

Block work is currently continuing above the ring beam level. The next major milestone will be the construction of the roof.

Running along the front of the building, our signature generous veranda will provide shade and comfort in the hot summer months.

Work is also progressing well on the two latrine blocks – one for the pupils, and a smaller one for the teachers.
