We are delighted to share the news that our work at Chitukuko Community School is complete.
In front of representatives from the Ministry of Education and from the local community, our Construction Team handed the keys and official paperwork over to Chitukuko Community School Head Teacher Vera Musoni.
Although schools in Zambia have been closed since the end of March due to the pandemic, we have been able to continue construction work at the school implementing additional measures on site to keep everyone safe during the build.

Two additional teachers’ houses
Being a new, remote school has made it challenging to secure qualified teachers to come to Chitukuko Community School, compounded by a lack of decent, rented housing available nearby. The new houses means that the Ministry of Education will allocate more teachers to the school, continuing to help raise the standard of education.
The houses each have two bedrooms, living space and an outside kitchen. The first house has a separate, individual Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrine to the rear of the house.
In the second house we have installed a waterbourne toilet with a septic tank and soakaway. With no running water in the area, the system will use rain water from the roof which is collected in a water drum. During the dry season, water will be manually drawn from the nearby borehole to feed the drum.
Female latrine block
With pupil numbers more than doubling since the school first opened, the original latrine block was no longer enough for this growing school. Lack of facilities threatens the education of so many children in Zambia, particularly girls. When a girl reaches puberty, access to separate facilities to provide privacy can be a decisive factor as to whether she remains in education.
The new latrine block at Chitukuko is one of our biggest with seven individual cubicles; six for girls and one for female teachers.
