Rammed earth is a traditional building which does not use concrete. Walls are constructed by compacting earth in-between wooden panels, compressing layer upon layer and creating a solid earth wall.

Build It International has used rammed earth before, constructing a school and latrine block at Shipungu in 2012 and 2014. This is the first time we have used the technology to build a house.

Build It Graduate, Emmanuel, has been contracted to build the teachersโ€™ house. He completed his basic training at Kabaka in 2013 and has since learnt how to construct rammed earth at Shipungu. We spoke to Emmanuel who told us the benefits of building with rammed earth:

Work is also taking place on a new hexagonal classroom block and a new latrine. 20 trainees have been working tirelessly on the site and the foundations of the buildings are now complete.

Trainees will now begin to construct the walls of the new classroom and there is growing excitement in the community. Once construction is complete 135 pupils will have a new school to go to and will be taught by a qualified teacher for the first time.
